Nine-Tailed Fox Rainbow Obsidian Necklace — Ancient Guardian of Love & Loyalty
In the oldest Chinese texts, the nine-tailed fox was not a threat. It showed up during flourishing times — a sign that peace had arrived. This pendant carries that older story, carved in rainbow obsidian that reads as deep black in ordinary light but reveals iridescent bands of green, blue, and purple in bright light. No two pieces do this the same way.
What the Fox and the Nine Tails Mean
The nine-tailed fox first appears in the Shanhaijing — the Classic of Mountains and Seas — compiled between the fourth and first centuries BCE. An auspicious creature, linked to wise rulers and strong unions. A fox grows a new tail every hundred years in the tradition; nine tails means a thousand years of cultivation, the highest state recognized. Nine is the largest single digit in Chinese culture, associated with completion and the emperor himself. The tradition holds that a fox at this level moves between the earthly and the divine.
One Image, Many Cultures
The nine-tailed fox traveled across East Asia. In Japan it became the kitsune — messenger to Inari, deity of prosperity. In Korea, the kumiho. Different names, the same thread: great age, great wisdom, something beyond the ordinary.
