Miniature Thangka Leather Pendant — Hand-Painted Tibetan Deity Charm
Thangkas are one of the oldest forms of Tibetan devotional art. Monks and travelers have carried miniature versions for centuries — tucked into robes, worn around the neck, kept close on long journeys. This pendant works the same way. Each one holds a small hand-painted clay figure inside a stitched leather frame you can attach to a cord, bag, or keyring.
Clay Figures, Not Printed Transfers
The image inside is not a print. It is a tsa-tsa — a clay tablet molded and hand-painted in the Tibetan tradition. Tsa-tsas have been made for over a thousand years as portable objects of devotion, pressed from sacred clay and often mixed with mineral pigments. The figures here follow that same process: each one is individually painted, which means the colors and details vary slightly from piece to piece. That variation is the point. No two are identical.
The leather casing is hand-stitched with visible saddle stitching around a recessed square window. The frame is shallow — 0.85 cm thick — but sturdy enough to protect the clay face inside. The loop at the top takes a cord, a chain, or a clip.
Who These Deities Are
Each variant features a different figure from the Tibetan Buddhist tradition. Zambala (黄财神) is the wealth deity — usually depicted in yellow, holding a mongoose. Green Tara (绿度母) is associated with swift compassion and safe passage. Manjushri (文殊菩萨) carries a flaming sword said to cut through ignorance. Palden Lhamo (扎基拉姆) is a protector figure, one of the rare female dharmapalas in the tradition. The Five Lords (五爷) refers to a group of protective spirits venerated widely across Chinese Buddhist practice.
Practitioners choose the figure that matches what they are working on — or simply the one they feel drawn to. There is no wrong answer.
Care
Keep away from water and prolonged moisture — the clay face can soften if soaked. Wipe the leather with a dry cloth. Avoid contact with perfume or oils near the painted surface.
