Argentine Green Sandalwood Mala Bracelet — 108-Bead Wood Mala for Daily Practice & Calm
Green sandalwood from Argentina is dense enough to sink in water — a quality woodworkers and collectors use to sort aged material from new. These beads are cut from that heavier stock. You notice the weight before you notice anything else. Then the scent hits: faint, green, a little like cedar, nothing like synthetic fragrance.
What Makes Argentine Green Sandalwood Different
Most wood beads on the market come from fast-growing plantation timber — light, dry, and quick to lose whatever scent they had. Argentine green sandalwood (Bulnesia sarmientoi) is slower. It grows dense. The heartwood accumulates oils over decades, which is why the grain runs tight and why the fragrance lingers long after cutting. A bead made from this wood is not going to feel the same as boxwood or rosewood. It's heavier in the hand and warmer in color — olive-green when new, deepening toward gold-brown as the oils oxidize with wear.
The "sinking grade" designation matters here. It refers to wood dense enough that a bead dropped in water goes straight down. Not all pieces from the same tree qualify. Sourcing for this grade takes longer, which is why most vendors skip it.
108 Beads — Where That Number Comes From
Buddhist tradition counts 108 mental afflictions a practitioner works to overcome. A full mala of 108 beads gives one bead per recitation — a physical counter for a mental practice. That's the origin. In daily use, some people run through the full strand in meditation. Others just wear it wrapped several times at the wrist. Neither is wrong. The count stays the same either way.
These malas also come in single-loop bracelet format for those who prefer something closer to a standard wristband. Same material, smaller circumference, fewer beads — worn rather than counted.
Grain, Cut, and What They Mean for How It Ages
The variants here differ in two ways: bead size and how the grain is oriented during cutting. Straight-grain cuts (精工顺纹) show parallel lines running cleanly along the bead — more uniform, slightly smoother to the touch. Mixed-grain cuts (乱纹) follow the wood's natural figure, so each bead looks a little different from its neighbor. Neither is a defect. They are just different readings of the same material.
Specialty cuts — abacus beads, lantern beads, bamboo-joint, sugar-cube — change the silhouette while keeping the same wood. The abacus shape gives more surface area against the skin. The bamboo-joint cut catches light differently. These are aesthetic choices, not grading differences.
Care
Keep away from water, soaking, and perfume — moisture can cause wood to swell or crack over time. Wipe occasionally with a dry soft cloth. The color and scent will deepen naturally with handling; this is normal for dense oiled wood.
