Ghau Box Pendant with Hand-Painted Tsakli Deity — Miniature Tibetan Locket Necklace
Tibetan pilgrims used to carry a small reliquary box against their chest — a ghau — with a deity figure or sacred object sealed inside. This pendant is that tradition at 19.7mm. Gold-tone titanium steel frame, glass front, and a hand-painted miniature deity in polymer clay inside. Small enough to wear daily. Clear enough to see the figure.
What a Ghau Box Is
A ghau (also spelled gau or gawu) is a Tibetan reliquary locket worn as a pendant or fastened to clothing. Nomads and pilgrims kept them close during long journeys through high-altitude terrain. Inside went whatever the wearer considered sacred — a rolled mantra, a relic, or a small image of a protective deity. The outside was typically metal, worked to be durable.
This version keeps that structure intact. Titanium steel frame. Hinged or press-fit closure. Glass face so the figure is visible without opening. It is not a locket in the Western sense — it is a carrying vessel, and the figure inside is the reason it exists.
The Figure Inside: Clay, Not Print
Each deity figure is a tsakli-style miniature — a format with roots in Tibetan ritual art, where small painted images served as portable stand-ins for larger thangka scrolls. These figures are polymer clay, shaped and painted by hand. Color, facial features, headdress details — done individually, not stamped or printed.
Because each one is finished by hand, no two are exactly alike. Minor variations in color depth or feature placement are normal. They are not defects. They are the point.
Available figures include Green Tara (绿度母), Mahakala (大黑天), Yellow Jambhala (黄财神), Zajirama (扎基拉姆), Wuye (五爷), the Six-Syllable Mantra (六字真言), Dragon forms, and others — each associated with different intentions in the tradition. Wealth deities are said to draw abundance. Protective figures are kept close during uncertain times. Green Tara is long associated with compassion and safe passage.
Care
Wipe the metal frame with a soft cloth and keep it away from perfume and prolonged moisture. The clay figure inside should not get wet — avoid submerging. Remove before swimming or bathing.
